What happened to English?

Forgive me if this topic has been beaten to death, but I feel it's a good place for me to start off. I should begin by saying I'm a bit of a grammar Nazi. I don't expect perfection, merely I expect those with the same supposed level of education as myself or higher to be able to converse at a similar level to myself.

So why is it that when I log onto Facebook or other sites, I feel like I've stepped back into the stone age? I understand that Facebook is much less formal than a classroom or work-related documents, but to throw the entire language out the window is absurd.

To this day, I do not understand what is achieved through the use of poor spelling or grammar. I am fully aware that some people genuinely can not spell or speak English as a second language, and I'm not directing this at them. This is for the people who can properly use English and choose not to. All it does is make the writer look foolish and detract from any point (no matter how valid) that they are trying to make. Simply put, I can't take someone's opinion seriously when I have to translate "sUmtNG lYK diS" to "something like this" before being able to understand it.

If you are trying to prove a point you are not going to do yourself any favours by using poor spelling or grammar. It does not make you look intelligent, it does not impress anyone and it does not look cool. It is a pain to read and it makes you look  like a less-evolved life form. If you want someone to read what you're written, make it worth reading.

Hello and welcome to Theory of De-Evolution, where I plan to share my thoughts on things I see in my everyday life that makes me believe that intelligence of our species is declining. I'll do a few long rants here and there if a good topic comes up, but I think this will mostly be quick insights. I don't really have a set schedule for posting, I'll just write as topics come up. That said, if anyone has a topic they'd like me to cover, feel free to contact me and I'll see what I can do.

I would like to point out before I go any further that everything I say here is my own opinion and it's all meant for entertainment (yours and mine). It's okay if you disagree and I'm all for a healthy debate, just keep your words tasteful.
